1983 FXWG Shovelhead, frame up rebuild, "the Daddy-O Shovelhead"

originalThis Shovelhead had seen better days. Dave Blondell brought it in to me for recomendations after he bought it a while back. I found it to be low powered but basicallyit was all there, an old FXWG with a few home modifications. On closer look it really looked like a lot of time and miles were catching up to it.

The thing is that a nearly 40 year old bike has been rebuilt, modified and ridden hard for untold miles. The parts are ready to wear out and theres a lot to wear out. If its not worn out, its about to. Then there is the problem of new or rebuilt parts and older technologies limiting the potential for a modern classic bike.

frameSo my answer is to tear it down to the bare frame and rebuild it starting with an S&S 93" Shovel-head motor. From there I will replace all the components of this bike with quality performance and high functioning and show quality components. So it was decided and that is the route we're going. The next few days saw the dismantling and removal of everything but the bare frame shown here. Cleaned up the frame and made a few modifications for our new configuration.

....And so the transformation begins

wheelsI ordered an S&S 93ci Shovelhead motor and OD6 Baker transmission and that's gonna take some time to arrive so the next startwas to map out the project. I started mocking up some new components to the bare frame. First, a set of Ultima Kingspoke wheels - 16x3.5 in the back and 23x3 in the front. Then I mounted a pair of Avon Cobra Chrome blackwall tires. Fuel tank is a, stretched, custom 1 piece 4.5 gallon, will work on the mounting after we have more components installed. Next is the chrome wide swingarm so we can run 1" belt on final drive, and a pair of 10" progressive Duro shocks with stock style chrome springerstruts. Then a Paughco round oil tank and chrome early style foot controls and floorboards. The front end is chrome blind wide glide. I wasnt happy with the hard chrome tubes so I ordered triple chrome, have to wait on those. Topped off with brass pullback risers and Wyatt Gatling stretched headlamp and beautiful Carillo handlebars. The brass is going to be an accent throughout the bike. Also I have used a number of items from the Wyatt Gatling line of products. In the interim time I found some great steel fenders, front and rear, no modification yet. Then the chrome tubes arrived, along with springless chrome kickstand and now we have the basic lines of the build.

shovelrollerWoo Hoo, the motor has arrived. S&S 93ci Shovelhead motor with S&S E carberator and single fire ignition. Started with handlebar controls and sculpted mirrors on top. Added matching Kingspoke rotors and 1" rear belt pulley. getting ready for the tranny to arrive so I used Xzotic "5speed into 4 speed frame" stainless tranny plate - this will be for our Baker 6 speed overdrive transmission. Wait till you see this combination of new, old, performance and top of the line components.
